Client Story

Migel is now 18 and a junior in high school. He started at the Clubs at the age of 13 and is well on his way to college, but getting to this point has been difficult. Migel was recruited into the gang life at age 8 by his father and brother. He began doing drugs and drinking soon after. His mother was beaten anytime she tried to stop his father from taking him. Migel was beaten as part of his gang life, he also stopped attending school and soon his mother was arrested because of neglect. Migel tried to go back to school, but soon after his mom became ill and he and his brother watched her pass away. His father abandoned the family and he was left moving from relative to relative. His sister talked him into going to the Boys & Girls Clubs and that is where he began to change his life. At the age of 14 the state was awarded custody of Migel as none in his family was deemed fit to live with. Migel continued to attend the Clubs where he was exposed to new opportunities and encouraged to stay in school. Migel is now the president of the Keystone Club, a Jr. Staff, and traveled to Florida as part of the Clubs summer exchange program. In 2010 he was named youth of the year for the Clubs and competed at teh state level where he won a $500 scholarship for college.
